On Thursday I will be heading back to China for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. I know many Americans haven't heard of the games, I only had because I knew Getty covered them back in 2006 but these games are huge in Asia. It will be my second trip to China, the last one coming at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. I had so much fun writing this blog during those games, that I wanted to continue it for this trip in which I will be gone for 24 days. I will do my best to add something every day but anyone who read my blog back in 2008 knows that sometimes access to a computer that can access blocked sites can be tough (yes the word blog is blocked in China). However, I will include posts about the food, bathrooms, shopping, venues, games, living conditions, my colleagues, etc. I will try to include a link to the Getty website as well containing the best pictures from each day at the games.
As far as the games, the Guangzhou Asian Games (an Olympics for Asia) will feature 42 sports, including 28 Olympic sports and 14-non-Olympic sports, breaking down into 476 disciplines. More than 14,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries will attend the largest event in Asia, competing for a record 476 gold medals.
I will be going with a group of 12 people (7 shooters, 3 editors, 1 IT and one coordinator) from Getty. The team consists of Getty employees from all over the world. We will be staying in apartments connected with the games but we won't have a dedicated office to work in so I will be checking out venues all over the city. I am leaving in just two days so keep coming back to the blog to see how my trip is going and please ask questions/comments and I will try to answer them all.
